Life with Hidden Disabilities: An Insider's Perspective

"You are Invited to the Opening Reception for Indiana Arts Commission FY2017 Individual Artist Program Grant Award Recipient Alys Caviness-Gober. Life with Hidden Disabilities: An Insider's Perspective features a series of 14 paintings by Caviness-Gober, a Noblesville resident and Hamilton County Artists' Association juried artist.

These paintings are the result of a FY2017 Indiana Arts Commission Individual Artist Program grant. Alys' project idea was to create a series of 12 paintings expressing life with hidden disabilities (hidden disabilities have no visual indicators). Physical, mental, and emotional pain, and financial distress are hallmarks of hidden disabilities. Alys has an' insider's perspective on life with hidden disabilities: she has a rare lung disease, heart problems, chronic inflammation, bones spurs and arthritis in her neck and spine, retinal bleeds, glaucoma, and is a stroke survivor. She's been yelled at for using handicapped parking spaces (despite her disability license plate), and she's experienced prejudice and discrimination in places she's worked. Employers, co-workers, even friends often say, 'but you don't LOOK sick.'

A few years ago, Alys feared her worsening visual impairments would end her painting career just as it had barely begun. She started using texture to create images on canvas, then feel her way across the texture applying paint. Alys says her new process often reveals hidden elements of her artistic visions. Having the opportunity to create the paintings in this exhibit is a dream come true for Alys. She finished 14 paintings in this exhibit for the grant project series. Alys hopes her project paintings will raise awareness about hidden disabilities, and that you will enjoy the June exhibit and the Opening Reception June 9th at Meyer Najem Corporation!"
